Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

  1. ...beauty cannot be judged objectively,
  2. for what one person finds beautiful or admirable
  3. may not appeal to another...

This holds true for fashion, so when I am asked what my customers should wear
for their family photo shoot, there are two things I can say with certainty.

Your wardrobe selections need to be

cohesive and .....

But let's start here:

The first decision to make is on the location of your photo session.

Location, location, location; the sky is the limit.

You may decide that studio portraits are the best option for your family portraits.
Today I want to write about selecting a wardrobe for outdoor portrait sessions.

•• The second decision to make is about the season of the year to schedule.

What season best suits your family's personality?
Be creative! It is not necessary to stick to the status quo!

Locations may look different as seasons come and go. Your wardrobe selections for a winter scene might be different than outfits picked for a spring session.

-yes, a family photo session can EVEN be planned at night!

••• Third... make a decision about color palette. I will say it again...

The SECOND most important thing about your selection is cohesion.

I have seen portraits with the wardrobe collection
blending into the color palette of the location,
but I have also seen beautiful portraits with the collection
standing out purposefully against the palette.

The best family portraits I have seen depend on this visual cohesion.

•••• Our fourth step is in selecting style. I will say it again...

cohesion...cohesion...cohesion.

Most of the time, it will be easier for a family of small children to create cohesion with one style of clothing. BUT, when your children are older and have developed their own personalities, how do you create cohesion then?

If one member of the family has a style that stands out, than create cohesion
by selecting outfits for everyone else that stand out in other ways. The
differences can become humorous or just slight to create balance.

Then, again, creative a cohesive color palette,
even if the styles you pick are polar opposites.

After you finish reading all of this, you will only begin to see that these four tips
only slightly cover all of the options when deciding your wardrobe selections.
After you start planning you might see that some compromises will have to be made between family members. The perfect wardrobe selection only takes your family photo session so far. There is something far more important than wardrobe selection. The MOST beautiful family portraits show in the posing, how much fun the family has together and/or how much they love each other. This, then becomes the focal point, regardless of what anyone is wearing.

SO, I have to say that

••••• The fifth and final step is to have fun!!!

Having FUN is MORE important than anything.

#1

Have fun!!!

If you make your planning a fun activity,
than the photoshoot is more
likely to follow suit.
